Admission

How do I apply for a place?
The City of Edinburgh is divided into catchment areas.
Every household in Edinburgh has a catchment area associated with it,
where you would be given priority admission (with the exception of Gaelic education provision).

Please note that your nearest school may not be your
catchment school. Typically each year we have a waiting list for places
at Sciennes where catchment children then non catchment children with
siblings already at Sciennes will take priority.
In the first instance parents should make contact with school
directly (preferably in writing) to enquire if there is a space for
their child in the relevant year group. Contact the school office by emailing
admin@sciennes.edin.sch.uk. Parents should include the
pupil’s full name, address, date of birth and a contact telephone
number.
You will need to complete an application form.
The enrolment form can only be completed at school and birth certificates and proof of residence (council tax assessment
letter and a recent utility bill) must be produced at the time of
registration.
If a place is available, your request will be granted. If not, your
request will be refused and you will receive a letter from the Head
Teacher explaining why. It will also tell you about your right to appeal
the decision. Your child's name will then be placed on the waiting
list.
Waiting lists are normally prioritised according to the date the
request was received. The top priority will be given to those living in
the catchment area.
When will I be informed of the outcome of my request?
A decision will be issued in writing as soon as possible. Please make allowances during the school holidays.
Is my child guaranteed a place at the
catchment school?
If a school is full it will be necessary to refuse admission and
form a waiting list, even if you have moved into the catchment area.
However, the Council will provide a place in an appropriate school if
your catchment school is full.
HOW TO REGISTER A PUPIL AT SCIENNES AFTER THE START OF THE NEW SCHOOL SESSION AT ALL STAGES OF EDUCATION P1-P7
In the first instance parents should make contact with the school
directly (preferably in writing) to enquire if there is a space for
their child in the relevant year group. The parent should include the
pupil’s full name, address, date of birth and a contact telephone
number.
If spaces are available, a tour of the school may be arranged by
contacting Mrs Brenda Ellis in the School Office or by sending an email
to
admin@sciennes.edin.sch.uk.
The enrolment form can only be completed at school and birth certificates and proof of residence (council tax assessment
letter and a recent utility bill) must be produced at the time of
registration. It is useful to provide samples of work from your
child's previous school for the new class teacher if possible. You will
be issued with a School Handbook, uniform order form and information
about school meals and extra-curricular clubs.
Medical Care
When you enrol your child in school, please ensure that the School
Health Service is aware of any special medical conditions or
requirements your child may have. It is also important that you give the
school a telephone number where you can be contacted during the school
day, in case of emergency. The school will contact you immediately if
your child has to be sent home if ill or is going to
hospital because of an accident. Please inform the school immediately of
any change to the contact telephone number(s).
NEW P2-P7 PUPILS IN AUGUST
All new pupils joining P2-P7 in August should report to Reception
and make their way to the Gym Hall with their parents or carers. Pupils
will then be collected by senior staff and escorted to their new class.
Pupils line up outside both entrances and also exit from both sides
of the building, depending on classroom: please note which is your
child's entrance/exit and arrange a meeting point.
Your child will also be placed in one of four House teams by the
class teacher: Grange, Sienna, Lauder or Tantallon. PE clothing is
available for each.
Pupils joining Sciennes can pay for a school lunch on their first day
until the family is added to our online payment system (WisePay) or can
bring a packed lunch. Children will also require a drink and a snack
and should bring a fully equipped pencil case (sharpened pencils,
coloured pencils, eraser, ruler, glue stick) and P.E. kit in a gym bag.
P.E. kit should be a change of clothes - t-shirt, shorts/jogging
trousers and gym shoes.
